Compiz is a compositing window manager that uses 3D graphics acceleration via OpenGL. It provides various new graphical effects and features on any desktop environment, including Gnome and KDE.

For ubuntu users, compiz is installed by default for 7.10 gutsy release. Just install the control panel for it.
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
After the install is complete:
- Go to the taskbar menu, System > Preferences > Appearance
- Click on the Visual Effects tab.
- Click on Custom checkbox.
- Press Close button.
- Go to the taskbar menu, System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
- Under desktop Category, Tick off the Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube.
- Hold Ctrl+Alt and move your mouse around to spin the 3d desktop cube.
Default hot keys:
- Switch desktops on cube: Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
- Switch desktops on cube - with active window following: Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
- Rotate cube manually: Ctrl + Alt + left-click
- Zoom-in once: Super-key + right-click
- Zoom-in manually: Super-key + wheel mouse up
- Zoom-out manually: Super-key + wheel mouse down
- Move window: Alt + left-click
- Slow-motion: Shift + F10
- Transparency: Put mouse cursor over the window then press Alt + wheel mouse down
- Expose effect: Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow or Point the mouse in top right at screen
- Take screenshot: Super-key + left-click drag
For other Linux distributions, it isn't as simple but when I get some time i will put up a how to.
