How to enable 3D desktop

For ubuntu users, compiz is installed by default for 7.10 gutsy release. Just install the control panel for it.
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

    After the install is complete:
  1. Go to the taskbar menu, System > Preferences > Appearance
  2. Click on the Visual Effects tab.
  3. Click on Custom checkbox.
  4. Press Close button.
  5. Go to the taskbar menu, System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
  6. Under desktop Category, Tick off the Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube.
  7. Hold Ctrl+Alt and move your mouse around to spin the 3d desktop cube.
    Default hot keys:
  • Switch desktops on cube: Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
  • Switch desktops on cube - with active window following: Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
  • Rotate cube manually: Ctrl + Alt + left-click
  • Zoom-in once: Super-key + right-click
  • Zoom-in manually: Super-key + wheel mouse up
  • Zoom-out manually: Super-key + wheel mouse down
  • Move window: Alt + left-click
  • Slow-motion: Shift + F10
  • Transparency: Put mouse cursor over the window then press Alt + wheel mouse down
  • Expose effect: Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow or Point the mouse in top right at screen
  • Take screenshot: Super-key + left-click drag

For other Linux distributions, it isn't as simple but when I get some time i will put up a how to.
